Summer Concert Kickoff, Sports Clinics On Tap This Week

Get a look at what's happening in Cinnaminson this week.

After what was hopefully a great Fourth of July holiday, it's back to business as usual this week. But "business as usual" doesn't have to mean "boring." There's plenty to do during the week ahead.

The last several days have been scorchers, and it's not expected to cool off much anytime soon, with temperatures hovering in the mid- to high 90s pretty much all week. With that in mind, the organizers behind the free summer concerts at Wood Park have wisely moved this week's show to the (gloriously air-conditioned) Cinnaminson Middle School auditorium. The Carl Letterie Jazz Quartet will begin their FREE performance at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11.

Thursday's show kicks off the township's free summer concert series—with eight straight weeks of Thursday night performances planned. Assuming things cool down, the rest of those shows will be held at Wood Park.

The Mike Fries All-Star Basketball Camp begins at 9 a.m. Monday at Cinnaminson Middle School. The camp, run by Fries, the head coach of the boys basketball team at the high school (and fifth grade teacher at Rush), is designed to provide a fun, challenging and educational experience for boys 8-14.

At the end of the week, Cinnaminson varsity and junior varsity lacrosse coaches Laura Rickus and Gina Quaranta will host a lacrosse clinic for girls entering fourth through ninth grades. The clinic is $70 if you register before Friday, $80 if later. It starts at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. Contact rickusl@cinnaminson.com for a registration form and more details.

On Friday, Action Karate will host two free karate workshops for children ages 3-5 at the Cinnaminson branch of the Burlington County Library. Workshops will be held at 1:30 and 2 p.m. Registration is requested, but not required. Sign up here.

Though they may be too old for the karate workshops, adults can get their own form of self-defense education at the library, with a demonstration of simple home security measures scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Registration IS required for this event.

It's a quiet week for local government—township committee only holds one meeting this month, scheduled for next Monday—but the Cinnaminson Board of Education is holding a special meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the conference room at the Memorial School. The main item on the agenda is an expulsion hearing, according to Superintendent Salvatore Illuzzi. The meeting will be held primarily behind closed doors.
