Gloucester Township 10-Year-Old Makes Her Mark at Broad Street Run

Allie Hauer was one of the youngest people to finish the 2012 Broad Street Run in Philadelphia.

Allie Hauer cruised across the finish line at the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia on Sunday, holding her mother's hand.  Mother and daughter finished the 10-mile race in 1:47:45. Allie, 10, was one of the youngest of 34,012 finishers, according to official race results.  "She wouldn't stop, she wouldn't slow down," Erika Hauer, 36, said of her daughter. "She could have kept going after that." Allie, who turned 10 on April 29, said her favorite part of the race was seeing the mass of runners gathered at the starting line of the nation's largest 10-mile run.  Along the race course, people cheered on the young dynamo, and sang "Happy Birthday" to Allie as she ran past, her mother said.  (Allie and her mom wore matching pink T-shirts that …

Poll: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

A New York Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat.

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly priced equipment for…

While yes there are gloves, bats and spikes that run in that area of cost, there is more then enough options are lower prices. The problem I see with this generation and baseball/softball is they have far more options of things to do in spring, and baseball/softball season is over for most kids before school is out. When I was younger baseball was a summer sport, not late winter into spring sport…   more ›

Commissioner Promises There Will be Cheerleading in Cinnaminson

Football left Pop Warner but will the cheerleaders follow?

Commissioners from Cinnaminson football announced last month they were leaving Pop Warner and joining a different league. Commissioners from Cinnaminson cheerleading are still weighing their options on what to do, but board member Annie D’Aiutolo promises: there will be cheerleading in Cinnaminson. The football players in Cinnaminson will now play for the South Jersey Independent Youth Football Association (SJIYFA), a move made by commissioners after spending more than 20 years with Pop Warner. “We have the choice of either going with them to the new league or to stay with Pop Warner without a football team,” said D’Aiutolo, commissioner of the Cinnaminson Cheerleading Association. She, along with other board members, will hold an …

Now Batting for Patch: Mark Teixeira

The Yankees first-baseman has signed on as "Commissioner of Patch Baseball."

Yankees first baseman Mark "Tex" Teixeira has a new team.  No, the four-time Gold Glove winner hasn't been traded.  He's signed on with Patch, as "Commissioner of Patch Baseball." Teixeira will interact with Patch users by regularly responding to questions, sharing baseball tips, and posting exclusive videos. Teixeira will also offer young athletes advice on how to stay in shape and why healthful eating is so important for optimal performance. “I live in a Patch town now and I keep tabs on my original hometown via the Patch site there, so I’ve seen the ways that Patch supports its communities,” said Teixeira. “I’m excited to be a part of that by connecting with Patch users who have the same passion for baseball that I do. I’m eager to see …

CHS Girls' Softball: Fresh Paint, Fresh Start

The CHS girls' softball team paint their storage container as a start to a new season.

Members of the Cinnaminson High School girls' varsity softball team donated their time Saturday morning to paint the softball storage container at Wood Park.   This project will go toward their community service hours they must complete each year in order to qualify for a monetary scholarship when they graduate.  “Projects like what the girls did today definitely help out the township by helping to beautify our parks,” said Mayor Don Brauckmann, whose daughter is on the team. Brauckmann, who is also the director of parks and recreation, presented the idea to the Cinnaminson girls' softball board, who agreed it would make a good service project. The board coordinated the project with the softball parents' booster club. "I want to thank Mark…

Poll: Will the Phillies Go All the Way?

The Fightin' Phils return to Philadelphia today for their home opener. Can the Phillies win the World Series? Vote in our poll.

Yes, folks, Phillies baseball is back. The Fightin' Phils play their home opener today against the Miami Marlins. It's shaping up to be an interesting start. Charlie Manuel shook up the batting order for the preseason—something many fans wished he had tried during last year's playoffs. Chase Utley starts on the disabled list for the second year, and this time he's joined by Ryan Howard.  Prognosticators are mixed: Some say the Phillies, who have been atop the National League East for years, are the team to beat in the division. Others take a less rosy view of the season. But we want to know what you think. Will the Phillies go all the way and recapture World Series glory this year? Vote in our poll and leave your season predictions in the …

Cinnaminson Football Changes Leagues

Board member Ken Miller calls it "a new start."

For the first time in more than two decades, Cinnaminson youth will play football this fall in a different league. Board member Ken Miller said it was time for something different. “We just felt like we needed a change to make things better for our program as a whole,” Miller said. The 5- to 15-year-olds will now play in the South Jersey Independent Youth Football Association (SJIYFA). Miller, and other board members, will hold an informational session for parents on April 3 regarding the change and registration. “This was not a fly-by-night decision,” Miller said. He, along with board members Mark Rapp, Joe Curry and Steve D’Aiutolo, went to several meetings with people from the new league before coming to the decision to change over. “We…

Super Bowl Champs Greet Fans in Moorestown

New York Giants Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, fresh off a Super Bowl victory, sign autographs for fans at BC Sports Saturday.

South Jersey Eagles fans may bleed green, but it was a sea of Big Blue that took over the Moorestown Mall Saturday afternoon. Hundreds of fans turned out to greet two New York Giants wide receivers, Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks. The Super Bowl-winning players signed autographs for fans at the mall’s BC Sports store. Fans lined up hours in advance of the 1 p.m. event. First in line was Burlington’s Deleon family. Dad David brought sons Dazani, 11, and Devian, 9—all lifelong Giants fans who traveled to New York City last month for the parade, just as they did in 2004. “We’ve been fans since birth. It’s in our genes,” David Deleon said. Despite living in Eagles territory, the family has found kindred spirits to watch games with. “You …

As a lifelong Philadelphia sports fan, I plan on boycotting this store and telling my friends to do the same. What a bunch of b.s. This is the Philadelphia metro area. If fans of sports teams from other areas want to see their favorite players, then let them do so- in their team's metro area. What's next? Tony Romo appearing at BC Sports for the local Cowgirl fans?   more ›
