Former Philadelphia Eagles coach gets new gig in Kansas City.
Well, that didn't take long. Less than a week after being dismissed as coach of the Philadelpha Eagles, Andy Reid has landed his next gig as coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. According to numerous sports websites, Reid was flying to Kansas City to accept the job. Reid's lawyers were ironing out details of the contract, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Kansas City Star was also reporting that the deal was done. Reid was fired Monday by Birds owner Jeff Lurie following a 4-12 season and ending a 14-year tenure. Reid suffered through a dismal season and also on a personal end this year. His son Garrett died of a heroin overdose during training camp. The case on Garrett Reid's death is closed. Northampton County District Attorney John M. Morganelli said in a press conference Monday afternoon that Lehigh University and his office have closed the investigation into the death of the oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid on Aug. 5. Speaking of Garrett Reid, who died of an accidental heroin overdose in his dorm at Eagles training camp at Lehigh University, Morganelli said his office could not determine whether the heroin that killed Reid was obtained in Northampton County or the Lehigh Valley or whether he had brought it to training camp with him. The oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid died of an accidental heroin overdose but "the investigation isn't completely over," the Northampton County district attorney announced Thursday. District Attorney John M. Morganelli said investigators want to talk to the last two people who saw Garrett Reid, 29, alive and also find out who may have supplied him with illegal drugs. "I am confident that Reid's death was the result of a self-injected lethal dose of heroin," Morganelli said. Reid died on Aug. 5. Too many turnovers. Too many penalties. Too many mistakes. Too bad. The Philadelphia Eagles shouldn't be losing football games to the Cleveland Browns. And they almost did. After losing the lead, the Birds rallied with a little over a minute to pull out a 17-16 victory. A win is a win. But this should have been a blowout. The Birds are supposed to be an elite Super Bowl contending team while the Brownies are supposed to be the doormat of the National Football League. That's why they play the game. The expression "for the birds" means "worthless," "useless," "unreliable," "unacceptable." In 2011, Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie could have described the play of his football team that way. This year, he's put Coach Andy Reid on notice that another .500 season is "unacceptable." As the Eagles' 2012 NFL season kicks off Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, will they be "for the birds" again this year? It's hard to say. The NFL is a high-wire act in which anything goes. Shock and sadness gripped Philadelphia Eagles fans Sunday upon learning that the eldest son of Coach Andy Reid had died. At training camp at Lehigh University between practices Sunday, fans milled around the merchandise tent, some expressing disbelief upon hearing about Garrett Reid's death. Others, who had already heard the news, said they were stunned and saddened. "I'm heartbroken for his family," said Jason Turner of Lincoln, who heard the news on the radio while driving up to camp. "The Reid sons had some struggles over the last couple of years. This is some sad news." The Philadelphia Eagles opened training camp at Lehigh University Sunday with the same expectations as last year—to win it all. But the mantra is a little different for Coach Andy Reid this year—it's win or else.
