Cinnaminson scoffs at charging student teachers and looks to avoid sky-high copying costs.
Cinnaminson’s Board of Education met Tuesday night at the middle school cafetorium. Here are five things the came out the meeting: 1. It’s likely Cinnaminson won’t join Medford schools in charging student teachers to work in the district. Medford made the change last month as a revenue-generating tactic. Cinnaminson board member James Herschel called Medford’s move “ludicrous.” Superintendent Salvatore Illuzzi agreed, noting it does not cost Cinnaminson anything to host student teachers and, if anything, “we are the beneficiaries.” 2. The board had a first reading of a revised harassment, intimidation and bullying policy, with changes mandated by the state. While acknowledging the importance of a strong policy and saying that Cinnaminson …

More than 150 Cinnaminson students receive individual recognition for a job well done.
As the school year wraps up, Cinnaminson’s Board of Education gave over a chunk of its meeting Tuesday to recognize district students’ outstanding achievements over the past year. From kindergartners to graduating seniors, more than 150 students received awards for their feats in academics, athletics, invention competitions, art and poetry festivals, book reading contests and much more. “Each year when we talk about the opening of school, we talk about the promise of a new school year, “ said Superintendent Salvatore Illuzzi. “In many ways, that’s the best part of education, you get a chance to start again. “And each year, as you come to an end, you judge it by whether it was the success you hoped it to be,” he continued. “We can only …

Cinnaminson school board officials managed to reduce the tax impact for residents, two weeks after the original proposal.
School board officials shaved off about 2 more cents on the tax rate for the proposed 2011-12 budget, saving the average homeowner about $16 since the original proposal. For the homeowner with property valued at the township average of $295,000, that means a tax increase of $98, down from $114. At Tuesday's regular meeting of the school board, Superintendent Salvatore Illuzzi said the budget is $143,975 less than what was proposed March 1. The budget now stands at $42,006,342. Business Administrator Thomas Egan said he found ways for the board to hire within to save money. "We also saw a reduction in our pension obligation," Egan said. After losing more than $3 million last year in reduced state aid, the school board already knew taxes …

Several students are recognized after receiving the highest marks on NJ ASK tests.
Forty-three Cinnaminson students from third to eighth grade scored a perfect 300 on the math portion of the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK) tests, a comprehensive, multi-grade assessment program. Camille Johnson, a basic skills and math teacher at Eleanor Rush Intermediate School, home to grades three through five, said the feat is a testament to both teacher and student. "The children and the teachers are so hardworking," Johnson said. Twenty-nine students from Rush received the honors, while Cinnaminson Middle School had 14 students to receive the perfect score in math. One eighth grade student achieved a perfect score in the language arts portion, while five eighth-graders scored perfectly on the science test. The…
