Slightly more than 32,000 runners crossed the finish at the 34th annual Broad Street Run Sunday, and 98 of them were Cinnaminson residents. Cinnaminson's fastest runner was 42-year-old James Makowski, who ran the 10-mile race in 1:03:07, for an average pace of 6:19 (per mile). He was followed closely by Rich Wojnar, 40, who finished with a time of 1:03:35, for an average pace of 6:21. The youngest runner representing Cinnaminson in the race was 16-year-old Tyler O'Donnell, who ran the race in just 1:05:11, averaging 6:31 per mile. According to Tyler's father, William O'Donnell, Tyler finished 14th in his age group and 560th overall. Runners are being encouraged to bring as little as possible with them this year.
Following the backpack bombings at the Boston Marathon two weeks ago, runners in this year's Broad Street Run in Philadelphia won't be able to tote their gear in a backpack, race organizers announced in a mass email to participants Monday. Taking a page from the Transportation Safety Administration's playbook, race organizers are mandating runners use clear plastic drawstring bags, which will be handed out at the expo Friday and Saturday, to stow their gear this year. “You are strongly encouraged to bring as little as possible with you to the start of the race,” race organizers said in the email to runners. “All items brought into the start area are subject to search and/or confiscation.” Race organizers only indicated backpacks would be …

Philadelphia's runners are showing support for Boston with their socks.
As the nation recovers from aftershocks of the Boston Marathon bombings, people are finding ways to support the city that lost so much. From Facebook posts to charitable donations, Bostonians-at-heart are rallying to show support for Beantown. In the City of Brotherly Love, one popular way to show the love is apparently through one's socks. According to a recent Philly Mag blog post, many area sporting good stores are stocking up on red socks. Why? Because runners converging on Philadelphia are preparing to show they care. Those participating in the Broad Street Run, slated for Sunday, May 5, are planning to wear red running socks to show love for Boston, whose major-league baseball team is the Red Sox. Following an attack on the Boston Marathon finish, Mayor Michael Nutter vows to step up security for the May 5 race.
The roughly 40,000 runners signed up for this year’s Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run in Philadelphia on May 5 can expect to see a major increase in security in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured more than 130, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said at a press conference Monday evening. A year after the race sold out in five server-crash-filled hours, Broad Street Run officials on Wednesday released lottery details for the 2013 race on the race website. With 40,000 spots up for grabs, the lottery will open at 12:01 a.m. Feb. 4 and close Feb. 15 at 11:59 p.m., and race officials encouraged runners to spread out registrations over the 12-day period, as lottery chances are equal no matter when runners register. Race officials suggested runners register according to the following schedule: The lottery will be conducted electronically, with results posted on broadstreetrun.com by 10 a.m. Feb. 19, and all runners who register for the lottery will receive an email notifying them of their status. Allie Hauer was one of the youngest people to finish the 2012 Broad Street Run in Philadelphia.
Allie Hauer cruised across the finish line at the Broad Street Run in Philadelphia on Sunday, holding her mother's hand. Mother and daughter finished the 10-mile race in 1:47:45. Allie, 10, was one of the youngest of 34,012 finishers, according to official race results. "She wouldn't stop, she wouldn't slow down," Erika Hauer, 36, said of her daughter. "She could have kept going after that." Allie, who turned 10 on April 29, said her favorite part of the race was seeing the mass of runners gathered at the starting line of the nation's largest 10-mile run.
