Burlington County will begin assessing a $50 processing fee to pay for prisoners' health care costs, which totaled $1.1 million last year.
Following the lead of several other counties in the state, Burlington County Freeholders have given tentative approval to the levying of a $50 processing fee on all inmates committed to the Burlington County Detention Center and Correctional Work Release Center to offset mounting health care costs. Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio said the fees, which will be assessed at the time inmates are processed into the jail, are expected to generate upwards of $150,000 in the first year. “In recent years, the annual cost of providing medical care to inmates, including instances of hospitalization, have totaled more than $800,000,” said Garganio. “When all the bills were added up for 2011, that number skyrocketed to $1.1 million.” Once an …

Burlington County food banks are most in need of donations during the summer.
Burlington County is holding a countywide food drive this month to benefit local food pantries. Freeholder Mary Ann O’Brien—in collaboration with the United Way of Burlington County, the Burlington County Chamber of Commerce, Burlington County Courts and local nonprofits—has asked county employees to collect food items for local food pantries through June 22. Residents and local businesses are also being asked to continue to donate non-perishable food, money or food gift cards to their local food banks, or to Catholic Charities and Christian Caring Centers. These two agencies are distributing all collected items to pantries across the county. "I am asking county residents and local businesses to join our efforts to …

Burlington County's new website gives residents and local businesses alike the tools they need to succeed in today's economy.
Looking for employment or employees? Burlington County has a new tool to help with both. The county launched its new “Business and Job Seekers Services” website last week, designed to help county residents and local businesses find employment, job training or hire qualified staff. The new site, which can be accessed at www.co.burlington.nj.us/employment, asks visitors to pick a path: either as a job seeker or as a business in search of employees. These two specific paths lead to valuable employment information. Local businesses can learn how the county can help find and train qualified workers, review hard-to-fill positions, determine competitive salaries, and write effective job postings. This website will discuss how to avoid layoff …

Burlington County Freeholder Mary Ann O'Brien will visit Boundary Creek Park in Moorestown on June 3 as part of the county's "Sneaker Sundays."
Freeholder Mary Ann O’Brien, an avid runner, will continue the county’s “Sneaker Sundays”—a summer-long program aimed at drawing residents of all ages on to county park trails for a casual Sunday stroll—at Moorestown’s Boundary Creek Park on June 3. O’Brien kicked off Sneaker Sundays at the Historic Smithville Park this past Sunday during the “Victorian Games.” Five more county parks, including Boundary Creek, will be featured over the course of the summer. “Walking is good healthy exercise for everyone,” said O’Brien. “I encourage families to bring out their children and grandparents. And in the process, they will all discover a wonderful county park system that they might not have known existed.” Boundary Creek Park is located at 601 …

The best local and seasonal food, along with live entertainment, will be featured every weekend through October.
Burlington County’s popular farmers market will reopen Saturday at the Burlington County Community Agricultural Center at 500 Centerton Road in Moorestown, offering up a sixth season of Jersey Fresh fruits and vegetables and, once again, featuring a variety of live entertainment, baked goods and unique crafts. Last season nearly four dozen vendors—offering fresh produce and other agricultural products, as well as prepared foods, crafts, and other specialty items—were on site, and Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio said this season will bring with it another wide array of offerings for shoppers. “Expect more of the same,” he said. “No one will be disappointed by the selection of the finest fruits and vegetables that area farmers have to …

Burlington County Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio says he'll press for reforms after rate hike fight with New Jersey American Water.
Burlington County Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio said Tuesday’s decision by the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) to knock down New Jersey American Water’s rate increase “could be called a small victory” for ratepayers. According to a release from the county, American Water came away from its meeting with the BPU with a rate hike less than one-third of the $95 million it originally sought. However, Garganio said as far as he is concerned, “there is still a battle to be waged here.” He said he would press for reforms in the way the public is notified and participates in the process, and that would include reforms for all the state entities involved. “We came away from (Tuesday’s) hearing knowing only that American Water was just awarded $…

Neither the county nor the township put out the flier, officials say.
A flier left on the windshields of cars and at households across the township lets residents know of a meeting that is not happening. On brightly colored yellow paper, a flier promoting a Wednesday meeting inviting residents to the Cinnaminson Community Center to talk about a county project, is not happening because the county didn't schedule it yet. And neither did the township. The project is the proposed roundabout for the intersection of Parry Road, Riverton Road and Branch Pike "I have no idea where that came from," Mayor Don Brauckmann said of the flier. "We didn't put it out." And the county didn't, according to Fred Turek, township engineer. "I looked into it," Turek said. "We did not issue any letters or pamphlets, nor did the …

Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio presses state office to stand firm and call off negotiations with New Jersey American Water.
Burlington County Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio has called on the New Jersey Division of Rate Counsel to “cease and desist” negotiations aimed at arriving at a compromise with New Jersey American Water (NJAW) on its request for a 20 percent rate increase. In a letter to Rate Counsel Director Stefanie Brand, Garganio demanded the agency stand firm on its own expert’s analysis that calls for a decrease in water rate revenue in the amount of $45.8 million. NJAW is currently seeking $95.5 million over its current revenues of $565 million. “This is not the time to play ‘let’s make a deal,’” wrote Garganio. “The outrage from ratepayers and residents is clear: It’s time to draw a line in the sand and end the business-as-usual process of …

The New Jersey Division of Rate Counsel will seek a rate decrease of $45.8 million for New Jersey American Water, countering the utility's push for a 20 percent increase.
Burlington County freeholders declared a partial victory this week in their fight against New Jersey American Water’s (NJAW) rate hike, after learning the New Jersey Division of Rate Counsel will counter by seeking an actual rate decrease. “Burlington County residents who have signed our petition, online or through the mail, have been heard,” said Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio. “Rate Counsel, which represents all utility customers in the state, will argue for an actual cut in water rates when hearings begin the end of March. “Obviously, we are still at the mercy of the Office of Administrative Law and the Board of Public Utilities, which ultimately decides who pays what,” he added. “So I encourage all our residents to add their names …

The auction has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 1.
Burlington County freeholders postponed the auction of Buttonwood Hospital one week to allow more time for the review of public comment on the proposed sale, and also to assess the qualifications and background of potential bidders. The auction was reset for 2 p.m. Thursday, March 1, in the Burlington County freeholder conference room, 49 Rancocas Road, Mount Holly. The auction was originally scheduled for Friday, Feb. 24. In addition, the board voted to move the second of the two hearings regarding the possible sale from the freeholder boardroom to Rancocas Valley Regional High School’s performing arts center, 520 Jacksonville Road, Mount Holly.
