Burlington County freeholders cut $17.1 million in spending to pass a budget that once again cuts the tax levy and the tax rate.
After cutting $17.1 million in spending, Burlington County freeholders reduced the county tax rate for the 22nd year in a row. Freeholders adopted a $199.8 million budget Wednesday that cuts the amount of tax dollars needed to run county government by $6.2 million, making this the fifth year in a row the tax levy has been reduced. Since 2007, taxes have been cut a total of $14.7 million and spending has been reduced by $26.8 million for the same period. This year’s budget calls for a cut in the county tax rate from 30.96¢ per $100 of equalized valuation to 30.91¢. “These multimillion dollar reductions in taxes and spending did not come easily but, once again, they come at a time when they are needed most,” said Freeholder Director Bruce…

The township had to wait for the county to adopt its budget—which happened Wednesday night.
The county budget was adopted Wednesday night, which means once the tax rate is struck for Burlington County towns, tax bills can go out to the residents of Cinnaminson. Due to the delay of the sale of Buttonwood Hospital—which was finalized just last week, according to Phillyburbs.com—the final budget vote was pushed back, too. “Our goal is to have it mailed out by Friday,” said Charlene Webster, county spokesperson, of each town’s final tax rate. “The towns should get it by Monday.” Sandra Root, Cinnaminson’s tax collector, said tax bills would be prepared when the tax rate is known. After bills are mailed out, residents have 25 days to pay their taxes. However, the Aug. 1 deadline still stands—there’s just an extended grace period. “…

The company is also providing the county with four data packages that can be used to activate and quickly program variable message boards, which are usually placed along highways to warn motorists of dangerous conditions, or direct them to an AM radio station broadcasting important updates. “It goes without saying, during times of emergency, communications is key,” said Freeholder Mary Ann O’Brien in a recent release. “We appreciate AT&T’s generosity, and will certainly make good use of these phones and the software. Although he came from humble, if not obscure, beginnings, the newest employee in the Burlington County Sheriff’s Department is trained and ready to take on some serious assignments. His name is Scottie, a 2-year-old chocolate Labrador mix, who along with his handler, Sheriff’s Officer Monica Clark, has just completed an intense 14-week training course—funded and taught by the state police—in explosive detection. Scottie is now also a member of the New Jersey State Police Detect and Render Safe Task Force—or to put it in plain language, he is certified to search for and sniff out bombs. “Or to put it another way, Scottie is not just another pretty, furry face,” said Sheriff Jean Stanfield. “Explosive detection is serious business. Scottie …

The county can easily cut $5 million more out of their budget if they would end the Municipal Park Development Pork, oops I meant Park, Program - where they “grant” county taxpayer’s money to townships like Moorestown to improve its parks. Funny, I always thought Moorestown was a rich town that did not need handouts. I thought several years ago Moorestown won Money Magazine’s award as most …   more ›
