Odds 'Very Good' of New Restaurant in District 611 Space

Developer Jim Brandenburger explains why the Riverton eatery didn't work, and strikes a hopeful note as he looks toward the future.

Developer Jim Brandenburger is confident he can bring a restaurant back to Riverton in the space recently vacated by District 611—just not the same one. "I think the odds are very good that a restaurant like it will reopen (in that space)," he said Monday, a week after the founders of District 611 announced the Broad Street eatery would be closing its doors after six months in business. According to Brandenburger, the restaurant struggled because it offered a "first-class" experience, which came with "first-class expenses," and the establishment simply wasn't doing enough business to sustain itself. "The concept would have been really successful if we had had more daytime traffic," he said. "We couldn't survive on just Friday, Saturday and…

District 611 in Riverton Closes

The Broad Street restaurant, the creation of a trio of Stephen Starr alumni, opened last fall.

After roughly six months in business, District 611 in Riverton is closing its doors indefinitely. According to a statement posted on the restaurant's website Monday, the eatery is shutting down due to a number of factors. "Though the Riverton community has been nothing short of amazing in terms of its support, our concept is simply no longer sustainable in its current set-up," the statement reads. "With a large number of menu items being offered outside of the brick oven pizza and two fully functioning kitchens, the operation is pretty massive." Those issues are compounded by the limited customer traffic—"a natural downside of operating in the suburbs"—and "major limitations on the option for pursuing a liquor license," since Riverton is a…

District 611 and Tokyo Blue are both outstanding, and I've never had a bad experience at either. Sammy Chon's is really fast food, but they're amazing as well. Frankly, i'm not very impressed with any of the Italian restaurants in town. M'Bacio was excellent but they priced themselves out of business.   more ›

District 611 in Riverton Will Open...

The new restaurant from Stephen Starr alums announced an opening date sooner than you might have thought.

District 611, a new restaurant from former Stephen Starr restaurant employees, is slated to open in Riverton Saturday. According to the restaurant's Facebook page, its cuisine is contemporary New American (locally sourced ingredients, unexpectedly delicious mash-ups) fused with Neapolitan-style pizza. District 611 is owned by Starr alumni Brian Baglin and Catherine Piotrowski and headed by executive chef David Perini (also a Starr alum). The restaurant held a friends and family night this week but will officially open to the public for lunch and dinner this weekend. District 611 is located at 710 Broad Street in Riverton. New Restaurant District 611 Set to Open in Riverton

Third time will hopefully be the charm for Riverton building owner Jim Brandenburger, as he joins with Stephen Starr alums.

Last week, a throng of workers were nailing wooden beams, hanging tiles and installing lights, all to make way for Riverton’s newest restaurant, District 611, slated to open Nov. 10. This will be the third restaurant to prevail in the corner storefront within the brick-faced mall behind Beneficial Savings Bank on Broad Street. Tara’s Cafe and Frankie’s Home Cooking, the two prior eateries, both seemed to open with some spark, but couldn’t keep the fires burning. But this time, it looks like the new owners might have a recipe for success, as three experienced foodies and one local builder have come together in a kind of serendipity. One night last July, building owner and developer Jim Brandenburger, 46, went to restaurateur Stephen Starr’s…
