Learn who founded Earth Day and why we celebrate it April 22.
Monday marks the 44th annual Earth Day, a celebration that began in 1970 as a protest movement against pollution. Here are five facts about why we go "green" every April 22. 1. We have late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson (D-WI) to thank for the official Earth Day celebration. But many credit John McConnell, an activist who proposed the day at a National UNESCO Conference in 1969, with founding Earth Day. While McConnell’s earlier Earth Day Proclamation received support from top United Nations officials, Nelson's work to have national teach-ins on April 22, 1970, spurred the national movement that became known as Earth Day. Both men commonly are referred to as Earth Day’s founder. 2. Nelson’s push for Earth Day stemmed from years of frustration …

Let's give it up for this praiseworthy planet of ours. Events this weekend and next take you indoors and out, mixing education, amusement and reminding you of the goodness of green.
I read recently that Martians don't even have a 'Mars Day'. Ingrates! Here on Earth, on the other hand, we're polite enough to honor our host planet every April 22 for the past 42 years. In 1970, a group of organizers decided to form a (then fashionable) teach-in focused on environmental issues. It was in response to the worst oil spill to date, which in the year prior sullied the waters and beaches of Santa Barbara, California, expanding out hundreds of miles into the Pacific. The group's mission was to develop public awareness of a topic so universally applicable: caring for our collective natural resources. The county is looking for volunteers to participate in the first of three county park cleanup days starting in March and running through April. “County residents, including quite a few young people, have played a substantial role in keeping our parks clean,” said Freeholder Director Bruce Garganio. “It’s very gratifying to see folks working together to keep our community green.” The first cleanup day is scheduled for March 10 at Amico Island Park on Norman Avenue in Delran. Volunteers will learn about watersheds and collect litter and debris along the shoreline. The event is being held in association with AmeriCorps Week and the state Department of Environmental Protection Delaware River and Bay Blitz. The cleanup starts at 9 a.m. and …

Learn who started Earth Day and why we celebrate it on April 22.
Today marks the 42nd annual Earth Day, a celebration that began in 1970 as a protest movement against pollution. Here are five facts about why we go green every April 22. And, here's a link to our green column published every week by Cinnaminson's own John Shields. 1. We have late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson (D-WI) to thank for the official Earth Day celebration.
