A forklift struck a natural gas heater, the fire chief said.
A natural gas heater broke at a business on North Read Street in Cinaminson's East Riverton section causing six area homes to be evacuated Sunday evening, said Fire Chief William Kramer. The call came in shortly after 6:45 p.m. and the area should be cleaned up by 8:30 p.m. Sunday night, Kramer added. As of 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the building was being ventilated. "As a precaution," Kramer said, "we did evacuate six houses on North Randolph Street." Those residents will be back in their homes shortly, Kramer said. Workers at the business—Medical Express, located at 407 North Read Street—were operating a forklift when it struck a natural gas heater that hangs from the ceiling. No injuries were reported. Cinnaminson, Riverton and Palmyra squads…

The mayor and deputy mayor want to focus on the industrial section of the township more this year.
Deputy Mayor Anthony Minniti calls 2013 a “very ambitious year.” For Minniti, who also serves as the director of economic development, every year can be described the same way. But he, along with township committee, is prepared to tackle an area of the township some have called “forgotten.” That’s ambitious. Cinnaminson’s industrial area sits between River Road and Route 130 in the northwestern section of town. You may have lived here your entire life and never turned down Taylors Lane, Union Landing Road or Industrial Highway and known its home to such industry giants as Sea Box, Airgas, Inc., even Habitat for Humanity, and more. “We want to start what we started on Route 130 but in a completely different area,” Minniti said. The deputy…

Flooding issues near the Delaware River and Pompeston Creek have been a major township concern.
Mayor Ben Young said a goal of his for 2013 is to continue public works’ projects already started, namely tackling the major flooding issues in East Riverton near Kern Street and Zeisner Avenue. “We’re trying to improve conditions,” said Young, who was appointed as Cinnaminson’s newest mayor at Monday’s reorganization meeting. Young and public works’ officials think new sluice gates—slated for installation soon—should help alleviate flooding conditions. Hundreds of households in the East Riverton section of the township are affected by flooding conditions—and it’s not just during major events like Hurricanes Irene and Sandy; it’s also during normal rainstorms. By the end of this month, Young said, state engineers should visit the area to…

A witness saw the suspects stealing metal from a yacht club near the river.
Cinnaminson Police were dispatched to North Randolph Street in the township's East Riverton section Wedneday morning for a reported burglary. Cindy Pierson, the Turtle Lady, talks about her family history in East Riverton.
The following is Part 1 of a three-part series about Cindy Pierson's family and the ancestral home she lives in on Pompess Avenue in the East Riverton section of Cinnaminson. She's also included some tidbits of local history. Pierson writes a blog for Cinnaminson Patch. I have decided that I need to stop thinking about the flooding and the water in basement for a while, and realized that you readers might like a change of pace as well. When I first started writing my blog, I said that I would throw in some history every now and again. So let's head down memory lane, shall we? Back in 1983, my husband and I were living in an apartment in Beverly. In the middle of June, we were told that our apartment building had been sold. The new …

Cindy Pierson, head of the Pompeston Creek Watershed Association, said those who live near the creek need to take extra precaution.
Not only have township officials warned those in low-lying areas to take extra precaution, but the Turtle Lady echoed those sentiments Friday. "The creek is absolutely going to flood, there's no doubt about it," said Cindy Pierson, president of the Pompeston Creek Watershed Association. The Pompeston Creek flows in Cinnaminson, Moorestown, Riverton and Delran. Pierson lives on Pompess Avenue in the Cinnaminson's East Riverton section, and even just at high tide, the creek fills up and water soaks the ground. Pierson is expecting the street to flood and for her own basement to be very, very wet. "People should tie down whatever might float away," said Pierson, who still needed to tie down her kayaks, rope off her trashcans and bring in …
