Habitat to Break Ground on Its First Home in Moorestown

Habitat for Humanity Burlington County will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for a new home—its first in Moorestown—on Sunday.

For the first time in its 25-year history, Habitat for Humanity Burlington County will break ground on a new home in Moorestown this weekend. The two-bedroom home is the 41st Habitat home in Burlington County, and the very first in Moorestown, according to executive director Todd Ermer. “We’re very excited. Already we’ve seen a lot of enthusiasm for the project.” The home will be built on a lot at 45 E. Third St., where fire destroyed a previously existing home a couple years ago. Habitat built two homes in Cinnaminson recently—both on Kern Street in the East Riverton section. A family moved in a week before Christmas and another family moved in just in time for Father's Day. Ermer said Habitat already has a family—a brother and sister—…

A Much Needed Father's Day Gift

A local bank and a charity join together to make a wish come true for a local family.

Rafael Santana-Franco has done the best he can to raise his three daughters, Emely, Iris and Selenny all by himself. The maintenance worker and single dad has trouble making ends meet even working full-time, with rent eating up more than 40 percent of his budget. Rafael’s living quarters were too small for a trio of active girls and he didn’t know where to turn.   “My girls are everything to me and I wanted to provide them with a home. I knew it wouldn’t be easy but it would be worth the effort” explained Rafael. Raphael applied for and got accepted into Habitat for Humanity Burlington County’s affordable homeownership program. He and his family put in more than 400 hours of sweat equity building theirs and others’ homes. As a result of …

Delta Sigma Theta Women to Help Build for Habitat Saturday

Two groups of 15 alumnae from the sorority will be working on the Kern Street home.

In honor of Mother’s Day, moms and grandmoms from our area will head to Cinnaminson Saturday morning to help build a house on Kern Street, partnering up with Habitat for Humanity (HFH). The women are alumnae of Delta Sigma Theta’s Rancocas Valley Chapter and come from South Jersey towns such as Burlington City, Cherry Hill, Willingboro and Mt. Laurel. “We are very excited about having these ladies … working side by side with our partner family,” said Lori Leonard, programs manager of Burlington County Habitat for Humanity, based in Cinnaminson. Last year, a family moved into a home on Kern Street that was built by HFH volunteers. The home next to it is currently being worked on. The family who will inhabit it will be working as well …

Photo Gallery: Home for the Holidays

The Bertrands get a special Christmas gift this year.

Lormeus and Frantzcia Bertrand got a special Christmas gift this year—a new home. But the two worked hard for it. They put in time and effort to help build their home and buy it for $85,000 with help from Habitat for Humanity, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and hundreds of other volunteers. The Bertrands—along with their four-year-old daughter—will move in before Christmas, the couple said, so they can celebrate in their new home on Kern Street in Cinnaminson's East Riverton section. "Today is a wonderful day for my wife and me," Lormeus Bertrand said. "I want to thank anyone who continued to work very hard to allow us this wonderful fortune." Live Civilly and Girl Scouts Troop 24309 in Cinnaminson and Troop 22175 in Mt. Laurel helped …

A New Home for Christmas

Habitat for Humanity finishes home for couple just in time for the holidays.

After Tuesday, Lormeus and Frantzcia Bertrand can spend the holidays and ring in the New Year in their new Cinnaminson home. In less than 9 months, Habitat for Humanity workers and volunteers constructed 544 Kern Street in Cinnaminson’s East Riverton section, providing an affordable and brand new home for the Bertrands and their baby. At 9 a.m. Tuesday morning, the home will officially be dedicated to the couple. “With God, everything is possible in life,” said Lormeus Bertrand in a release from Habitat. The family completed their required “sweat equity,” a piece of the Habitat for Humanity program mandatory in order to purchase the home. The Bertrands bought the 3-bedroom, 2-and-a-half-bath home for $85,000, with a 0 percent interest …

Not sound on a negative note.....but I wish there could be some safety measures utilized. Since the construction began, the site has not been blocked off to prevent anyone or anything from being harmed. For example: When the ground was broken and basement and footings were placed, it was all open. No tape or anything blocking the area off. Luckily, nothing has happened so far. However, as being a…   more ›

Kern Street Home Will Get Its First Wall

Habitat for Humanity volunteers will begin work on the Cinnaminson home.

The first wall of a Habitat for Humanity house on Kern Street in the township will go up this weekend and officially kick off the building of the new home. The future home at 544 Kern St. already has a family slated to move in later this year. A groundbreaking was held in March and was attended by N.J. Rep Jon Runyan. “We are going to be moving fairly quickly,” said Caitlin Watterson, spokeswoman for Habitat for Humanity, whose county base is located in Cinnaminson. Thanks to a partnership between Habitat and Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, volunteers and staff from both groups will build the home. Another home is also being built on Kern Street, next door to 544. Watterson said she hopes work can simultaneously happen on that project, …

ReStore Celebrates Reinvestment in Community

Habitat for Humanity's Saturday festival thanks loyal customers, who help neighbors move toward homeownership.

In celebration of five successful years selling discounted home furnishings to the public, the ReStore of Cinnaminson's Habitat for Humanity branch held a festival at its Taylors Lane location Saturday. Habitat ReStore sells donated home furnishings, new and used, and building materials at more than 50 percent below retail value to people in need. Profits are reinvested back into Habitat's local building projects, such as the homes on Kern Street.  “Today’s event is to celebrate the success of the ReStore in the last five years,” said Caitlin Watterson, public relations and procurement coordinator of Habitat for Humanity of Burlington County. “The community has been helpful in supporting our goals.” The event included face painting, cookie…

Groundbreaking Kicks Off Newest Habitat House in Cinnaminson

The Sunday groundbreaking on Kern Street draws an array of local politicians, including Rep. Jon Runyan.

A grassy lot dotted with trees and situated between two Kern Street homes will be busy over the next eight months as volunteers transform the land into two Habitat for Humanity houses. Habitat for Humanity Burlington County, with headquarters in Cinnaminson, broke ground on the land Sunday morning in an event attended by Habitat staff, volunteers, project donors and local politicians. Shovels plunging into the grass signaled the first visible step in a process that has gone on for months behind the scenes. Now, the lot will be hopping with volunteers throughout the spring and summer in anticipation of a November dedication. When completed, the space will hold a pair of three- or four-bedroom homes meant for local citizens currently living …
