I worked for the Hunters all my years in high school. Best job I ever had, many memories and stories I still tell today. Sad to hear of the loss of Barbara. My thoughts and prayers go to all the Hunter family.   more ›

Hunter's Farm Opens Friday

Farm market owner Amy Hunter is ready for the new season.

It’s official. Spring has sprung in Cinnaminson and Hunter’s Farm and Market is just about open for business. Hunter’s Farm, which has stood on Union Landing Road for more than 250 years, will open again Friday and will be offering local favorites as well as new items for sale this year. As vegetable gardens become increasingly popular in residential homes, Hunter’s Farm is keeping up with the trend and has expanded with a larger variety of vegetable plants, including tomatoes and peppers that can be taken home and planted in the backyard. Farm market owner and eighth-generation Hunter, Amy Hunter, grew up working on the farm and said a vegetable garden is a great activity for families, especially children. “It’s a great way to educate …

Shop Local and Reinvent Cinnaminson

Can the key to expediting economic recovery be a community-wide push to support local businesses? Would it hurt to try?

No matter where you sit on the political spectrum, you're likely rooting for a speedy economic recovery. Signs are surfacing we're trending in the right direction—not fast enough for many, but progressing nonetheless. Our economy, all $15 trillion worth of it, will rebuild the same way giant cruise ships make left turns—gradually but deliberately. Will we remake it in the same image of its 2006 self? That mid-decade boom was about pure control at the very top—mega-scale banks, automakers, and energy giants. With each came bureaucracies and bloated heirarchies that left them vulnerable to the worst kind of momentum. By the time they realized they were headed for a wall, all they could do was brace for impact. Four years later, we're still …

Share on Food For Maine's Future and Local Food:Maine Fiddlehead Festival FB pages. This was really well written. I especially like how you point out using your computer as a value added component (my words). Buying local doesn't mean you shut out the rest of the world, but buying local ensures more of your dollars stay in your community to fund schools, libraries, health programs, etc. Great job!   more ›

Those Poor Pumpkins: Weather Ruins This Year's Crop

Area farmers are seeing the end results of this summer’s extreme heat and heavy rains.

This time of year, pumpkins in South Jersey can usually be seen in bushels and baskets at local farm stands. After ripening on the vine, the harvest usually begins in late September through the end of October. But, this year’s crop is reportedly lighter than usual, as a result of a hot, dry July followed by heavy rains in August. “Pumpkins and any melons need to sit in a dry spot,” said Colleen Hart, of Lew’s Farm on Lenola Road in Moorestown. “After heavy rains, if they don’t have time to dry out, the skin gets soft and mushy.” Hart said that out of the 2-3 acres devoted to pumpkins on her farm, nearly half of the pumpkin crop was lost, and that the wilted ones would be thrown into the compost pile for animals. “This year, we might be …

We do have some larger pumpkins as well as a good number of smaller pumpkins available as well as hay, cornstalks, mums, gourds and Jack Be Little mini pumpkins. Although it's been a tough fall for pumpkins, other Jersey Fresh crops are looking great....spinach, collards, carrots, radishes, red leaf and romaine lettuce, beets, cabbage, apples and of course "Hunter's Own" sweet potatoes!   more ›

Fun in the Summertime Feeling at Burlington County Farmer's Market

The farmer's market offers delicious food, fresh produce, unique gifts and that fun in the summertime feeling.

It’s kind of crazy but I have never been able to find a free Saturday to visit the Burlington County Farmer's Market until this past weekend. Sports and activities have swallowed up so much of our leisure time but this particular morning, my husband and the girls were going to the park to play basketball. I had some time to myself on this beautiful summer day, which is a rarity, so I called my friend, Marie, and we headed on down to the farm. As soon as we got out of the car, the smell of barbecue cooking in the open air and faint folksy music swept over me. We took a spin around the outside market and checked out what the local merchants had to offer. People crowded around the fresh flower stands so we didn’t get too close but the flowers…
