Supporters are getting the hockey rink at Cinnaminson's Memorial Park ready to be reopened in the near future. Find out how you can help.
Volunteers showed up once again this weekend to continue the rejuvenation of the Memorial Park hockey rink. Several people turned out to help organizer Brian Lowy, a former coach in the defunct Cinnaminson Roller Hockey League, and his son Tyler make additional improvements to the rink Sunday, including scraping off and sweeping up the peeling paint, in preparation for a painter to come in and apply a new coat. The elder Lowy said he plans to organize another volunteer event soon. He's looking for volunteers to help with: The most crucial improvement to the rink will be the $3,800 repairs to the playing surface, which is necessary for the rink to be reopened. Township committee OK'd a contract with Nickolaus Construction to make those …

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story erroneously reported the day of this weekend's volunteer gathering at the hockey rink. Volunteers are encouraged to arrive at the rink by 10 a.m. Sunday, April 28. ________________________ Volunteers will gather at the hockey rink at Memorial Park this weekend for phase II of their continuing effort to restore the rink to its former glory. Several supporters, including past players and coaches in the defunct Cinnaminson Roller Hockey League, performed minor repairs and aesthetic improvements to the rink during Park Cleanup Day last month. And last week, township committee OK'd a contract with Nickolaus Construction for $3,800 to make repairs to the playing surface. Ahead of those repairs, …

After being mostly abandoned and, consequently, falling into disrepair, the beloved (by some) hockey rink at Memorial Park is set to get a new lease on life. The rink thrived for roughly a decade after the Cinnaminson Roller Hockey League was founded in 1995, according to former coach Brian Lowy, who ran the 6-8-Year-Old Division. But once surrounding towns started following Cinnaminson’s lead and formed their own leagues, the league folded, and the rink soon followed. Even after the league went under, plenty of people used the rink for pickup games, Lowy said. Though not in the greatest condition, “a little groundswell of volunteerism” rejuvenated the rink and allowed it to survive up until recently, when it deteriorated to the point …

The advisory committee meets once a month to discuss park and recreation initiatives.
Field usage is a top priority for the parks and recreation department this year as the group reforms under the direction of Committeeman Don Brauckmann. And Brauckmann, the director of parks and recreation, said that is a “massive undertaking.” “We really want to think of a coordinated approach for field usage,” Brauckmann said “It’s costs a lot of money to light our fields.” With that in mind, Brauckmann and the parks and recreation members have invited all Cinnaminson sports commissioners to their February meeting to “put our heads together and think how can we do this.” Brauckmann said he hopes the group can come up with a master schedule to maximize field usage at Wood and Memorial parks. “Hopefully we can come up with ideas,” he …

Boy Scout Troop 70 have several Scouts who have or will achieve Eagle Scout rank. Cinnaminson Patch has asked them to share their stories and photos with us. Scout: Akshay Patel Current Scout Rank: Life Scout School: Cinnaminson High School Grade: 11 Project Description: My Eagle Scout project was a dedication to the veterans of Cinnaminson, both alive and dead. When looking for a project idea, I asked Cinnaminson's mayor Don Brauckmann if there was anything I could do for the community. He then suggested a project the township was planning on doing which I was very interested in. He told me about an old war veterans memorial that is in Cinnaminson's Memorial Park that the township wanted to relocate to the park's new sledding hill. He …

Benches and picnic tables will go up soon.
The new play structure at Memorial Park officially opened this week, said township officials. According to the township's Facebook page, construction was delayed due to public works' Hurricane Sandy cleanup efforts. The page says: The play area still has work underway as there are two climbing events to add in the coming weeks as well as some benches, picnic tables, and more mulch. The play structure also opens in time for the Thanksgiving tournament sponsored by the Cinnaminson Soccer Club at Memorial Park. One of the next projects at Memorial Park is an upgrade to the bathroom and concession stand. The township was awarded grant money in the third round of the Municipal Park Development Assistance Program from Burlington County.

The playground will officially open next month, after township workers put on the finishing touches.
Work on the new play structure at Memorial Park started Tuesday, only a couple of weeks behind schedule. The empty space of dirt and rocks at the park however hasn’t been ignored all summer—township workers have been grading and cleaning the area. That was being done while the township waited for the construction company to start on the structure. “What we didn’t take into account was the construction company is extremely busy over the summer because school isn’t in session,” Mayor Don Brauckmann said. The company was supposed to be here Sept. 18 but thunderstorms forced the township to cancel. They were not available until this week. However Brauckmann said the play structure should be put together today. “You should see it there this …

The old play structure was taken down to make way for a new one.
Some families got a surprise this past weekend when they tried to use Memorial Park’s playground only to find an empty space of dirt and rocks. A sign erected where the play structure and swing set once stood said the park is undergoing renovations. The swing set was taken down for refurbishing and a brand new play structure will go up at the end of the summer. But why do it in the middle of the season? “It’s going to be an inconvenience at any time,” said Mayor Don Brauckmann, also the director of parks and recreation. “There’s never really a good time to do [it]. But there’s a higher volume of people in the parks in the spring and fall. And we can’t construct this in the winter.” With organized sports at Memorial Park at its slowest …

The township is set to receive $135,000 for park improvements.
Cinnaminson can finally move forward with renovating the bathrooms at Memorial Park since the town was awarded a county grant worth more than $100,000. But township officials didn’t get the full amount they asked for—so other park projects will have to be put on hold. County freeholders this week approved $5 million under the Municipal Park Development Assistance Program for 28 towns. Cinnaminson will get $135,000 for park improvements. Mayor Don Brauckmann, who also serves as the director of parks and recreation, said the township asked for $250,000 for Memorial Park and also for a walking path around Wood Park. That latter project will have to wait. “These grants are instrumental,” Brauckmann said. “We’re excited and thankful to the …
