Chip Kelly, a top candidate, will replace Andy Reid as new coach of Philadelphia Eagles, team announced Wednesday.
The search is over. Chip Kelly has been named the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. ESPN and the Philadelphia Inquirer first reported the hiring of Kelly, which the team then confirmed on its website around 12:30 p.m. A press conference has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m., the team said. The University of Oregon coach was considered among the team's top choices by owner Jeff Lurie but announced after his interview with the Birds that he was staying put. Well, those plans have changed. It may be due to the fact that the University of Oregon was facing NCAA sanctions. Kelly coached at the University of Oregon for four years and recently won the Fiesta Bowl. He will be the 21st coach in Philadelphia Eagles history. “Chip Kelly will be an …

Former Philadelphia Eagles coach gets new gig in Kansas City.
Well, that didn't take long. Less than a week after being dismissed as coach of the Philadelpha Eagles, Andy Reid has landed his next gig as coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. According to numerous sports websites, Reid was flying to Kansas City to accept the job. Reid's lawyers were ironing out details of the contract, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Kansas City Star was also reporting that the deal was done. Reid was fired Monday by Birds owner Jeff Lurie following a 4-12 season and ending a 14-year tenure. Reid suffered through a dismal season and also on a personal end this year. His son Garrett died of a heroin overdose during training camp. After 140 wins—a franchise record—and nine trips to the playoffs, including the 2004 run to the Super Bowl, it's official: Andy Reid is done as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. The team announced the news via a statement on its website, ahead of a noon press conference on Reid's firing. "Andy Reid won the most games of any head coach in Eagles history and he is someone I respect greatly and will remain friends with for many years to come,” said team owner Jeffrey Lurie in the statement. "But, it is time for the Eagles to move in a new direction. Coach Reid leaves us with a winning tradition that we can build upon. And we are very excited about the future.” But did a coach who set a franchise record deserve another chance after an …
Tenure ends after 14 years for Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid following another disappointing season.
Andy Reid is out. The longtime coach of the Philadelphia Eagles was fired Monday by owner Jeff Lurie following two disappointing seasons, including a 4-12 campaign that ended Sunday with an ugly loss against the New York Giants. The Philadelphia Eagles announced on their website Monday morning that Reid's tenure as coach has ended. "Andy Reid won the most games of any head coach in Eagles history and he is someone I respect greatly and will remain friends with for many years to come,” Lurie said in a statement. "But, it is time for the Eagles to move in a new direction. Coach Reid leaves us with a winning tradition that we can build upon. And we are very excited about the future.” The Birds really didn't mesh the past two years as free …

Northampton County District Attorney John M. Morganelli says case closed on Garrett Reid heroin overdose case.
The case on Garrett Reid's death is closed. Northampton County District Attorney John M. Morganelli said in a press conference Monday afternoon that Lehigh University and his office have closed the investigation into the death of the oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid on Aug. 5. Speaking of Garrett Reid, who died of an accidental heroin overdose in his dorm at Eagles training camp at Lehigh University, Morganelli said his office could not determine whether the heroin that killed Reid was obtained in Northampton County or the Lehigh Valley or whether he had brought it to training camp with him. Morganelli said when Reid, 29, died, he was in possession of 64 needles, 47 syringes and 19 vials of an unknown liquid that was later…

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli says the oldest son of Eagles football coach Andy Reid died of an accidental heroin overdose at Lehigh University in August.
The oldest son of Philadelphia Eagles Coach Andy Reid died of an accidental heroin overdose but "the investigation isn't completely over," the Northampton County district attorney announced Thursday. District Attorney John M. Morganelli said investigators want to talk to the last two people who saw Garrett Reid, 29, alive and also find out who may have supplied him with illegal drugs. "I am confident that Reid's death was the result of a self-injected lethal dose of heroin," Morganelli said. Reid died on Aug. 5. At that time, Morganelli said, Reid was in possession of "a substantial amount of syringes and needles." A used syringe and spoon were also found, he said. The drug paraphernalia discovered in a Reebok gym bag in Reid's apartment …

Philadelphia Eagles open season with rough outing against Cleveland Browns.
Too many turnovers. Too many penalties. Too many mistakes. Too bad. The Philadelphia Eagles shouldn't be losing football games to the Cleveland Browns. And they almost did. After losing the lead, the Birds rallied with a little over a minute to pull out a 17-16 victory. A win is a win. But this should have been a blowout. The Birds are supposed to be an elite Super Bowl contending team while the Brownies are supposed to be the doormat of the National Football League. That's why they play the game. And the game played by the Philadelphia Eagles against the Browns Sunday was one of frustration and disappointment. While the Birds produced nearly 500 yards of offense, the O committed five turnovers, including four interceptions by a rusty …

The Philadelphia Eagles need to get back to their winning ways.
The expression "for the birds" means "worthless," "useless," "unreliable," "unacceptable." In 2011, Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie could have described the play of his football team that way. This year, he's put Coach Andy Reid on notice that another .500 season is "unacceptable." As the Eagles' 2012 NFL season kicks off Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, will they be "for the birds" again this year? It's hard to say. The NFL is a high-wire act in which anything goes. The New York Giants played sub-par football for most of last year, but caught fire in the playoffs and torched the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. You gotta be in it to win it, as they say, and 8-8 records don't get you into the playoffs (unless you're the …

Fans at Eagles training camp Sunday share their thoughts on the death of Coach Andy Reid's oldest son, Garrett, dead at 29.
Shock and sadness gripped Philadelphia Eagles fans Sunday upon learning that the eldest son of Coach Andy Reid had died. At training camp at Lehigh University between practices Sunday, fans milled around the merchandise tent, some expressing disbelief upon hearing about Garrett Reid's death. Others, who had already heard the news, said they were stunned and saddened. "I'm heartbroken for his family," said Jason Turner of Lincoln, who heard the news on the radio while driving up to camp. "The Reid sons had some struggles over the last couple of years. This is some sad news." Garrett Reid, 29, was found dead in his bed at the Sayre Park dorms following an almost 10-year struggle with drug addiction and drug dealing. Reid was helping at camp …

If Philadelphia Eagles star QB Michael Vick goes down with an injury, Coach Andy Reid and his staff might be gone, too. Donovan McNabb provides insurance.
The Philadelphia Eagles opened training camp at Lehigh University Sunday with the same expectations as last year—to win it all. But the mantra is a little different for Coach Andy Reid this year—it's win or else. Owner Jeffrey Lurie made that quite clear during his end-of-season speech when he soured on a franchise that had such high expectations after several top-of-the-line free agency signings only to see Reid and his team do a belly flop throughout the whole year. But the Dream Team turned into Team Turmoil as wideout DeSean Jackson bitched about not having a new contract and Pro Bowler Asante Samuel complained about the competition at the cornerback spot. Well, Jackson now has a new contract and Samuel has been jettisoned. But Reid …
