Looking for a scenic, historic backdrop for your wedding? Burlington County Clerk Timothy Tyler will be performing individual wedding ceremonies at the county’s historic Smithville Mansion on Smithville Road in Eastampton on Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2012. “It is once again my pleasure to offer couples the unique opportunity to exchange vows at the stately Smithville Mansion,” said Tyler, who has performed more than 500 ceremonies since taking office in 2009. There are a limited number of spots available, so interested couples should contact the clerk’s office as soon as possible to schedule their ceremony. Planning a wedding or other special event? Stop by the (free) Bridal and Special Event Fair at Historic Smithville Park on Sunday, Oct. 21, and find out about the county venues at your disposal. Sponsored by the Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders, the fair offers guests an opportunity to learn about the two historic sites available for rent from April through October: the Smithville Mansion courtyard in Eastampton; and the Burlington County Prison Museum grounds in Mount Holly. Both outdoor venues are uniquely suited for entertaining guests. In recognition of Black History Month, the Burlington County freeholders are displaying the works of famed local artist Lady Bird Strickland at the Smithville Mansion Annex Art Gallery in Eastampton. Now a resident of Willingboro, Lady Bird Strickland was born into poverty in the foothills of Georgia in 1926 at a time when America was still a segregated society offering little opportunity or encouragement to African-American artists. She transformed herself from a young girl hanging around the Harlem clubs into a young woman who socialized with and painted some of the most influential entertainment and political figures of the mid-20th and 21st centuries. There are still appointments available for a Dec. 23 wedding at Smithville Mansion.
Happy couples ready to tie the knot this holiday season can still sign up to exchange their vows at Smithville Mansion. The Burlington County County Clerk is performing weddings between 4 and 8 p.m., Friday, Dec. 23. The Mansion will be decorated for the holidays and the bride and groom and their guests can use the billiard room for the ceremonies. Interested couples must obtain a license from the municipality in which either the bride or groom reside, unless neither person lives in New Jersey. In such cases, the license must be obtained at the Eastampton Municipal Complex. It takes 72 hours to obtain a license, so please plan ahead. Annual "Spirits and Spirits" wine tasting to be held at Mansion Saturday.
The Burlington County Board of Chosen Freeholders and the Friends of the Smithville Mansion present the annual “Spirits and Spirits” wine tasting event this Saturday. Guests (age 21 and older) are invited to sample wine and learn about the other “spirits” that may roam the Historic Smithville Mansion, an 1840s Greek revival estate. The cost is $30 per person, or $25 for members of the Friends of the Mansion. Proceeds benefit the restoration of the mansion. The wine tasting will include a variety of domestic wine, cheese and hor d‘oeuvres during the fundraising event.
