Patcher staffers learned more about the scope of hunger in South Jersey in a morning at the Food Bank in Pennsauken. Interested in learning what you can do to help? Read on.
After a busy evening of election night coverage, Patch staffers in South Jersey woke up bright and early Nov. 7 for a volunteerism gig that hit home—helping out at the Food Bank of South Jersey. The Patch volunteering day is part of an initiative promoted by Patch nationwide. Give 5 encourages employees to spend five days per year volunteering with an organization that supports local Patch communities. Past projects have included park cleanups and even going barefoot for a day. This time, we decided to do a project together. The Food Bank of South Jersey fits the bill perfectly. It serves four counties—Camden, Gloucester, Salem and part of Burlington—and runs programs that Patch has written about in the past, including its Just Peachy …

But what’s surprised her friends and family was her decision to spend it working in an earthquake-ravaged, third-world nation. Kirby, a 36-year-old nurse living in Cinnaminson, will leave Saturday and spend eight days tagging along with Samaritan Purse, an international Christian relief organization, on a mission to Haiti. There, she’ll be volunteering as both a nurse and an educator. “There’s a lot of sexually transmitted diseases, there’s malaria, typhoid—education comes along with the treatment,” Kirby said. Kirby has spent the last 20 years raising her two children. She met her future …

A Cinnaminson girls learns the value of volunteerism with a simple haircut for Wigs for Kids.

So it came as something of a surprise when the 4-year-old Cinnaminson girl announced one day that she wanted to cut off her blonde locks to help other children. Less surprising, says Madalyn’s mom Kristin DePhilippo, is the girl’s sense of giving, a trait she says Madalyn has always displayed. Earlier this month, Madalyn sat in a chair at Salon Kris Cole in Delran and watched as manager Theresa McDonough Peterson cut off 12 inches of her hair for Wigs for Kids. The nonprofit makes hairpieces for children who have lost their hair from cancer treatment, alopecia and other diseases. “I saw a little girl with no hair on TV and I wanted to give …
